“Automation to gut 1.5 million jobs from Australian economy” was the heading 24 Feb 2021 in the online Australian article.
As per the article, there is one job sector that will dramatically change in the next few years, forcing Australians to pivot as many will inevitably lose jobs.
The report suggests those most at risk are those who perform structured administrative tasks, with main effects being felt by Accountants, bookkeepers, office clerks and HR staff.
It’s predicted that more than half of the jobs in this category will be gone by 2030.
Also, co-ordinators in middle management roles will be in decline. More automation means less co-ordination required.
As noted in previous blogs, there will be an increased demand for more advanced digital skills, technical specialists with skills in: big data, process automation, robotics engineering, blockchain and machine learning. Also expanding are roles for digital specialists such as data scientists and software and app developers.
With these sobering thoughts in front of us, one hopes the Universities are focusing less on debits and credits for our newly minted accountants, and more on big data, machine learning, blockchain and process automation.
For those that aren’t adapting, there is the expectation that one in three workers will transform into the online gig economy. There’s been lots of news recently about the gig economy not delivering stability for participants. Also, there will be a continued increase in Australians working for charities, social enterprises and health/wellbeing services as workers align personal values and lifestyles with work.
It seems clear to those in the accounting field that automation is going to eliminate a lot of work, and staff should be moving into skilling up on big data, machine learning, blockchain and process automation.
The alternate is the real risk of becoming a digital outcast.
